It all began way back in 1989 when Mazda took a gamble. Needless to say, that gamble has paid off big time and with dividends. The Mazda MX-5 Miata has become the best-selling sports car of all time. As of April last year, more than 1 million examples have been built. That’s a staggering number considering the MX-5 Miata is a niche two-seat sports car that can be outright punishment for tall drivers. This latest fourth generation MX-5 Miata was just launched for the 2016 model year and remains unchanged for 2017.
Not only is it a bit smaller dimensionally than its immediate predecessor, but also lighter. The goal Mazda designer and engineers were given was to return the MX-5 Miata to its first generation roots. That meant weight was the ultimate enemy.
Fortunately, things turned out just fine, and its new naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 155 hp and 148 lb-ft of twist is an absolute gem. Our tester, of course, came with the standard six-speed manual, sending power to the rear wheels. There is a six-speed slushbox option, but it deserves no further mention. The new MX-5 RF is also just hitting the market and it’s a gorgeous targa and all, but we still have a thing for the manual soft top.
